Thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the activity level of every body organ, ie the body metabolic rate.
Hypothyroidism - It is the condition where thyroid hormones are produced in less than the required amounts. So the body "slows down". Symptoms are usually- Lethargy, sleepiness, constipation, hair loss, dry rough skin, feeling cold and pale, weight gain or there may not be any symptom. Why does it occur? Though genetic alterations in the enzymes required for the production of the hormones is a cause, usually there is auto immune destruction of the gland.
Treatment is usually long term. Meticulous dose adjustments are required to allow normal body functioning.
Hyperthyroidism - In this condition, there is excessive production of thyroid hormones. This could be because of either hyperstimulation of the gland by antibodies (Graves' disease) or a thyroid nodule.
Syptoms include weight loss, weakness, excessive warmth, sweating and tremors. In addition, in Graves' disease, the eyes become protruded and painful. There occurs severe weakening of bones and muscles. Treatment may involve medicines, radioactive iodine or surgery, as appropriate.
Goitre - Enlargement of the thyroid gland is known as goitre. It may be due to a harmless cyst or may even be a cancerous condition.
Pregnancy - Thyroid disorder occuring in pregnancy carries an increased risk especially to the baby. The normal ranges are different from that of non pregnant state.
Hypothyroidism if inadequately controlled leads to impaired mental development of the baby. Hyperthyroidism greatly increases the risk for the mother and is life threatening.
